I did productive-type things this week

Kinja'd!!!

Starting with the end result. I haven't carpeted the sub box yet but I cleaned up my install, soldered some previously wrapped wires, extended some, and got it all nicely hidden. Ran the power cables through a hole that the wiring harness comes through for a nice factory look.

Kinja'd!!!

I quite like how all of the cables just appear out of the floor right next to the amp

Kinja'd!!!

Mmmm..... so empty.

Kinja'd!!!

This is my high input connector. I didn't have the one that came with the amp so I just took a hacksaw to a PC power supply connector and nabbed a few pins for this. It was a 220w Compaq that long ago died so nothing of value was lost.

Kinja'd!!!

Also had a door tweeter that died long ago, and the only thing I had for a replacement was this speaker from an iMac G3. After violently desoldering the old capacitor crossover from the dead tweeter (the solder's melting point was far higher than the surrounding plastic) I soldered them together ghetto-style for packaging purposes.

Kinja'd!!!

This is roughly how the components are aligned in the door tweeter enclosure, with the wire snaking up the side. It works rather well, and doesn't sound any worse than stock, though they're pretty hard to notice anyways.

Fucking with getting car stero wiring correct is always productive. I really liked the images I got of your "violently desoldering" something. First thing that came to mind was "Solder Sucker Action baby!" but then you elaborated with "Plastic Deconstruction Event."

"After violently desoldering the old capacitor" This made me laugh.

Nice project, have you considered something other than carpet to clad the sub box? Just to make it different from everyone else's sub box.

Nice job with the connector from the old PC! That's a good find. Also, some of those old iMac speakers are made by Harmon Kardon!

Yep, those are indeed h/k tweeters. I'm thinking of replacing my driver's side with one as well, but it still works so I doubt I'll chop it up for no reason.

Not sure what I'd use other than carpet, honestly.

Yeah, the violent part was because I melted half of the old tweeter and didn't even really desolder it, I just melted the plastic then ripped it off with some pliers. The solder pads are still attached to the capacitor.

Yeah, I "desoldered" it by melting all of the plastic and then ripping it out with tweezers, solder pads and all. It was eventful.

I don't know what either, I had some dumb ideas that sound even dumber when typed so I'll leave them in my head.

Yes, your use of words appealed to my inner savage.

I should use pink shag carpet. I'm sure I could find some of that for cheap.

Ha ha! That would look...um, pink?

One thing I just thought of was a beer carton disguise? It would need to be wrapped in a matte clear contact to make it durable. Just thinking outside the box. (Groan) But whatever I'm old and tired.
